Elizabethan makeup and portraiture

The history of tutor cosmetics

Back in the 16th and 17th century, the ideal women was seen to have had a snow white complexion with red lips and cheeks, this was considered a sign of wealth and nobility , the lighter the skin complexion the wealthier you were.

In order for the Elizabethan women to achieve the snow white complexion,  a number of poisonous substances were mixed together such as vinegar and white lead or egg whites, powdered egg shells, alum , borax and white poppy seeds. These lotions which elizabethan would apply would bleach harm and irritate the skin, sometimes women would apply these lotions up to more than three times a week, it would not only be applied to the face however, it would also be applied to the neck breaststroke and hands sometimes blue veins were also draw on to create a more realistic look.

The Elizabethan look was also all about emphasising the cheeks and lips. The red mixture applied to these areas of the face were usually made from cochineal which was made from crushed beetles and also harmless product used as food colouring , vermillion, gum Arabic, egg white and milk from figs.

Simon Adams (2004). Eyewitness tudor . england : unknown.
"As Elizabeth aged she wanted to look as young as she could in order to portray to her people as being ageless , after catching a disease of small pox which nearly killed her she lead her people to believe the disease had left her unmarked therefore she would wear a makeup base of  lead and mercury which also caused deterioration to the skin. Poisionous products applied to the skin would sometimes leave Elizabethan women with nausea, stomach cramps paralysis or death."

Helen Reynolds (23/04/2003). A fashionable history of makeup and body decoration. England: heinemann library.
" Queen Elizabeth I 1533-1603 used poisionous drops from a deadly nightshade plant in order to make her pupils appear larger, for centuries afterwards this then later became common for fashionable women to do."

Wealthy tutor women also followed the fashion of dying their hair a light strawberry blonde colour using substances such as saffron cured seed oil and urine. Due to the amount of product Elizabethan women began to use on their hair this resulted in loss of hair due to this wigs and hair pieces suddenly became popular.Queen Elizabeth was known to have a collection of over 80 wigs.

Ian Mortimer (1/10/2009). The time travellers guide to elizabethan England . London: Vintage. 1

speaks vaguely about the history of cosmetics . The author addresses the reader as if he were Elizabeth and what it her lifestyle was like back in the Elizabethan era.
" But still your scalp itches from washing your hair in caustic lye".
By Ian Mortimer highlighting to the author Elizabeth washing her hair in caustic lye which is a mixture of potassium hydroxide in history terms this gives the reader an idea on how important the ideal women image was to the Elizabethan women.

Elizabeth symbolism and portraiture

Queen Elizabeth in her paintings, wanted to portray her undying love for her country . Queen Elizabeth never had any children and never married she told her people she was married to England. Queen Elizabeth can be considered as adored by her people there was an increase on her portraits being made , those who were wealthy had portraits of her around their houses whilst others had her portrait on badges which they would
Carry round with the  or even have it made into pendants on jewellery.

Elizabeth was approximately 5ft 4 her skin was blemished with small pox scars and burnt from lead poisoning, as she aged her teeth began to blacken and decay,  she also had halitosis and alopecia .Elizabeth s portraits were limited by government and she was also able to control the outcome as she aged in her portraits she still was painted as as women younger then her years, this was due to her wanting to show her country she was ageless and immortal.

Portraits are a symbol of making someone such as Elizabeth instantly recognisable due to their poses and style for example Elizabeth I loved her hands therefore she was often seen touching and holding things in majority of her portraits she was seen wearing a crow to portray she was queen.

Elizabeth s father king Henry VIII was often seen in portraits wearing red to symbolise wealth, he also posed with his hands on his hips in majority full length portrait perhaps to symbolise power.

The Tudor rose  also know as the union rose was recognizable in many of queen Elizabeth ' s gowns in her portrait. The traditional emblem of England was a symbol of Tudor dynasty  by Elizabeth wearing the Tudor rose in her portraits this was to symbolise her dynasty to her people.

The rainbow portrait painted by Isaac Oliver includes many symbols to about queen Elizabeth s lifestyle and beliefs. It is recognizable on Elizabeth s gown there embroidered eyes and ears  this is to portray that she sees and hears all. The crown in the portrait is worn for obvious reasons to symbolise royalty, the pearls she is wearing are to symbolise her wealth. The rainbow portrait is a very mythological piece, for example the crescent about Elizabeth s crown symbolises synthia the goddess of moon. The serpent catching the ruby in the portrait is a symbol of wisdom catching the Queens heart. Elizabeth is holding a rainbow which is the name of the portrait to symbolise peace  therefore the overall meaning of the portrait is to symbolise to her people peace in Latin the motto used is non sine sole iris meaning no rainbow without sun.

The pelican portrait was painted by Elizabeth ' s favourite portrait artist Nicholas Hillary. The painting includes many symbols such as pearls to symbolise wealth and also a Tudor rose which is recognisable on Elizabeth s gown to signify dynasty. The overall meaning of the portrait is to symbolise the love for her people this is recognizable due to a pelican being the symbol of true love, which was Elizabeth ' s favourite symbol. The pelican portrait is also a very mythological piece the Tudors believed that the pelican plucked out its feathers to feed it's young dying in the process which was meant to be a symbol of sacrifice and motherly love .

Elizabeth loved to wear black red and gold which she is seen wearing I  most of her portraits this is to symbolise her status and wealth . The Romans and churches were the only people who wore red And any fashionable elite person was known to wear black.

On the pelican painting on Elizabeth s gown she is wearing black work, which is black embroidery . The Tudors used to dye black thread with iron is ode and sew with the thread however due to using iron oxide to dye the thread this meant that the clothes disintegrated quickly. The two cherries in the pelican portrait which can be noticed behind her ear are meant to be a symbol of her virginity as Elizabeth was known as the virgin queen.

Elizabeth I small pox medal can be located in London British Museum. The small pox medal can be considered as a very important symbol of Elizabeth I. " In 1562 she caught small pox which was a disease which was caused her a close death. The medal was a symbolof her recovery and includes an image of St paul being bitten by a snake a near death caused which caused him no harm, this implied that a situation like this had too happened to Elizabeth and left her unharmed."

My own interpretation of a symbolic portrait

Overall my picture is meant to convey calmness. First of all I am pictured in my own house to highlight comfort . The colour of the walls and a throw I am sat on is blue which is a colour of calmness  . I decided to wear my onesie in my picture to symbolise being calm and relaxed and also to show warmth. The teddy bear I am holding is a symbol of love and affection , the teddy bear is also holding a makeup brush to symbolise my interests and creativity  . The glass of wine I am holding in my hand is a symbol of being relaxed but also being outgoing. Finally I decided not to emphasise my makeup in the picture taken of me therefore I am not wearing any makeup at all instead I am pictured wearing a face mask to convey naturalness and being relaxed .

Symbolic picture

The image of Jennifer Lopez which I found in a  'fabulous'magazine has many symbols which highlight her type of  lifestyle she live this is recognisable from her  her pose the background and what she is wearing.  Anaylising the image i am able to recognise that the location the image was taking was at an awards ceremony due to certain symbols in the background of the image such as the red carpet  Jennifer Lopez is standing on , this is a symbol of wealth and fame. The circular image positioned behind her head which looks like a ray of light can be considered as a symbol of radiance and beauty . Jennifer Lopez is wearing a silver full length dress which is a symbol of wealth and glamour she is also holding a matching clutch bag and wearing matching heels which is a symbol  of organisation , her hair is long and straight which makes her look sharp and her pose and facial expression particularly across the eyes highlights positivity and being focused. Overall the photo of Jennifer Lopez is trying to get across the meaning of glamour and wealth to the audience .
